Area Memorial Day observances



An observance will take place on Memorial Day at 9 a.m. on the common, sponsored by the Knights of Pythias. Rev. Jane Rich and Pastor Ken Wagstaff will participate, and there will also be a flag folding ceremony.


The parade will line up on Mechanic Street at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 26 and step off at 10:30 a.m., proceeding up Main Street to the Common. A ceremony will begin there at 11 a.m. with a color guard, firing squad, and Mahoosuc Band. Our speaker this year will be The Honorable William Schneider. All are invited to participate: veterans, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, former Miss Poppys.


A service will take place at 11 a.m. on Memorial Day at the East Bethel Cemetery on the Middle Intervale Road.


The parade will step off at the restaurant parking lot at 9 a.m. on Memorial Day. There will be a brief service at the veterans monument, then on to the Locke Mills Church for a service. Speaker will be American Legion Department of Maine Historian Ron Caron. The Historian will speak on the Veteran and history of the American Legion. Refreshments at the Legion Post afterward. (In the event of rain the observance will take place at the Post.)


At 1 p.m. on Memorial Day a ceremony, sponsored by the Bryant Pond Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, will be held at the Honor Roll near the Grange Hall. A parade to the Lakeside Cemetery will follow.


A Memorial Day ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 25, at 2 p.m. at the Maine Veterans’ Home at 477 High Street in South Paris.  A welcome address will be delivered by Joel Dutton, administrator of the facility, and Joe Cooney.  The flag raising will be performed by the WMVAC color guard.  There will be placement of the flowers on the Gold Star Mothers Memorial, by facility resident and Marine Lee McGall.  The Gettysburg address will be delivered by Art Hill.  Guest speaker for the ceremony is Richard Graves, First Vice commander of the American Legion.  Music selections will also be part of the program.
